Teachers the Star of the Show – Are Learners the Devoted Fans?

Online lessons are fun. Yes, if you have the tools and skills needed to successfully engage with learners online.

Let’s say you’re in the middle of your discussion when someone in your class accidentally clicked the presentation menu. And, of course, you will be deprived of the attention of your learners.

Then a minute or two is lost as you attend to the matter at hand and provide that much-needed reminder that nobody should be tinkering with their lappie or desktop or whatever to prevent this type of incident from happening again.

Well, it was a sign that boredom might be brewing among your learners, and they wanted something bombastic, especially when the lesson isn’t kind enough to wake them up and take in everything that’s being said and presented to them with the utmost attention .

How do we make our online engagement a real engagement without the boredom and stuff? Well, read on and you’ll learn a thing or two.

1. Never spend more than 30 percent to be the center of attention. Yes, let the learners participate 70 percent instead of you, the teacher, all the time talking and arguing and the like…unless you use the Socratic approach, where the lesson is approached through probing questions.

2. Diversity is king. Use presentation slides with a balanced amount of text, photos, colors, and the rest to avoid a boring presentation. Amaze them with moving objects, varied strategies, big actions when needed, say little kids need big actions, animated voices and loud colors and so on.

3. Maintain composure. You don’t know who among your learners is naughty enough to take screenshots of you and might later make fun of you instead of absorbing wisdom from your class. That’s why parents or guardians are nearby during online classes to make sure everything is ok and no one is doing inappropriate things online.

4. Always have learners open the camera until the last part of your lesson. Not only does this give you a chance to observe how they react to your thought-provoking questions, but it also ensures that everyone is doing the activities, e.g. B. Answering assignments, participating actively, and not shutting down due to environmental distractions.

5. Provide each learner with opportunities to speak, share, and engage in activities to either develop their listening, speaking, taking turns, empathy, and other skills critical to acquiring knowledge, good values, and all.

There you have it. With these few tips to ensure online engagement is fun and meaningful for all participants, teachers shouldn’t be the center of attention all the time, but give every learner a chance to shine. Yes, little effort could make them realize their worth, talent, and passion for achieving their goals.
