Free College Tuition for Senior Citizens

Free Tuition! Did you know that a senior attending college can earn a free degree if they only take six credit hours per semester and have a 2.0 grade point average? Some institutes charge a registration fee. Read on to see if your state has free college tuition.

Alabama

Alabama seniors can attend any two-year facility within the state completely free of charge.

Adults age 60 and older should contact a community college’s financial aid office for admission and eligibility details.

Alaska

The University of Alaska waives tuition for seniors old enough to receive full Social Security benefits. Seniors must wait until the first day of class to register to ensure there are still places available; You will also need to fill out a tuition waiver form.

Additional costs such as student activity, health center and laboratory fees are not covered; the student must pay them directly.

Arizona

At all 10 Maricopa Community College campuses, seniors are eligible for 50% of full tuition credit.

Students over the age of 65 must register between the first and second lesson of the semester to ensure that places are available

Arkansas

Arkansas waives tuition for anyone over the age of 60 who wishes to work toward a bachelor’s or master’s degree at state institutions.

Louisiana

Students age 55 and older attending Louisiana state schools receive free tuition and 50% off books and materials at the on-campus student bookstore.

Maryland

Any retired student in the University of Maryland system who is over the age of 60 can be exempted from tuition fees, even for degree-granting programs.

Michigan

Seniors 60 and older get free tuition at Northern Michigan University; At Wayne State University in Detroit, seniors 60 and older receive a 75% discount on tuition but must pay registration and related fees.

Ohio

Ohio residents who are at least 60 years old can attend any state college for free. Senior students are not credited and can only register if a place is available.

South Carolina

Residents 60 and older may attend tuition in government schools on a credit or non-credit basis for free, subject to places being available. The school must grant admission through its normal procedures.

Technology, laboratory and other fees are the responsibility of the student.

Tennessee

Tennessee residents age 65 or older may enroll in credit courses at state schools and community colleges.

Schools may charge a service fee of up to $70 per semester, which is used to keep records for these students.

Texas law allows students age 65 and older to take six credit hours of undergraduate or graduate degrees at public universities for free.

Washington institutions are required to waive some or all of their tuition fees for residents age 60 and older who have enrolled on credit based on available places. Nominal fees may apply for guest student courses.

Some schools limit seniors to a certain number of classes or credits; For example, Washington State University limits waivers to six credits each fall and spring semester. Other schools may only offer free exam options.

West Virginia

West Virginia allows residents age 65 and older to enroll in undergraduate and graduate degree programs, subject to space availability. Both credit and exam options are available. Schools can still require seniors to pay fees like parking.

While senior students at West Virginia University applying for credit must use the regular admissions form, those who wish to be non-degree students pay only $5 to apply.

Wyoming

Upon admission to the University of Wyoming, seniors age 65 and older may attend classes free of charge, subject to space availability.

Community colleges offer a tuition waiver form for seniors to submit. the exemptions do not cover tuition or other fees.
