Net neutrality: good or bad?

Internet has become an essential element for today’s people and everyone wants equal rights on the Internet, but in many countries such as Argentina, Belgium, China, Russia, South Korea, France and others, citizens do not have equal rights on the Internet. This means that you have to pay additional fees for browsing certain websites and some restrictions are enforced by internet service providers. Therefore, today we will discuss this relevant topic and its advantages and disadvantages.

What is net neutrality?

It is a principle that allows all Internet users to use the Internet in their own way, without additional fees and restrictions. According to this law, “individuals should be free to access all content and applications equally, and all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) must transmit all data on the Internet equally.”

Why is this so relevant?

Net neutrality has been a very popular topic since 2014. Many individuals such as World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee, Vinton Cerf, former US President Barack Obama and others are supporters of net neutrality. Recently, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted 3-2 to overturn net neutrality laws. The FCC is now trying to repeal these laws. For this reason, internet users in the US are protesting this action by the FCC, and members of the Republican House of Representatives are also supporting the restoration of net neutrality.

What’s the good side?

The big advantage is that the Internet is neutral for each individual and is a very important factor. It offers freedom of speech for those who want to speak out against injustice and other social or political issues. Another advantage is that ISPs cannot increase the prices of services, so anyone can easily access any service.

It increases the growth of online education in part because students and teachers can easily access learning materials. E-learners have a unique learning opportunity and ISPs cannot limit or bind them with unnecessary legislation.

Big companies and small startups both have access to the same resources and skills. It raises their limit for product or service innovation. That’s why users are protesting against the end of net neutrality.

What’s the bad side?

Like other things, net neutrality has its downsides. First of all, with net neutrality there is no compensation for data usage. Some services use a large amount of data for free, which is harmful for ISPs.

Under the guise of freedom of expression, obscene and inappropriate content is easily published on the internet as ISPs have no control over user data.

If net neutrality were removed, high-level data consumers would be asked to pay more for what they use, as the extra income is used to improve infrastructure.

Conclusion

It’s not a myth, it should be considered a serious problem. Some people think that the end is human rights violation, but that is not true because some things are ruining the internet with inappropriate content, so ending net neutrality is a better idea to get rid of these problems. It helps regulate the data consumption of malicious services.

On the other hand, users are not bound, hence users are free to express their opinions. Net neutrality offers the perfect mode to learn about the internet. It helps revolutionize the education system.

Otherwise, users should deal with the content of the Internet sensibly and use the resources sensibly.
