Like learning most languages, mastering Spanish can be difficult. Perhaps the greatest challenge in learning most languages is memorizing vocabulary. There are a certain number of basic grammar rules you need to know, but the word lists are endless!
While learning Spanish words, many people use standard methods to memorize them. Methods like repeating a word endlessly or spelling it out a hundred times. The problem with the standard methods is that they are really boring and time consuming.
So there are many other ways to quickly memorize Spanish vocabulary. One method that is becoming more popular these days is the use of the word association. This method simply associates an image or idea with the word to be memorized.
The method itself has been around for quite some time, but is only now becoming an expected study practice.
Let’s take a simple example: Image You want to remember the Spanish word for table. The word is “mesa”. As soon as you say it, it sounds like the word “mess”. So in this case we are making an association with a lot of chaos.
Close your eyes for 10 seconds and imagine a table full of clutter. As you introduce yourself, repeat the word Mesa to yourself.
That’s all there is to it. You will probably never forget the Spanish word for table!
There are many programs online and in bookstores that use different methods. My belief is that not everyone learns the same way. Many people are visual, but many people also need to see the words in front of them. I think learning from your source language is key, along with visual aids.
