Golfing is great in America’s Northwest corner

The natural beauty and creative golf courses of America’s Northwest corner will test the skills of most golfers. Forested hills, tall trees, rugged lava fields, sagebrush-filled canyons, wetlands, beautiful lakes, rivers and desert outcrops are all part of the Oregon and Washington golf course landscapes.

Washington golfers see it all

Some of Washington’s golf courses offer unbeatable views. You can play within sight of living volcanoes, in the shadow of towering mountains, overlooking islands and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, alongside rivers, in an alpine desert, and other scenic locations.

West of Seattle, the San Juan Islands have three islands with public golf courses, Orcas, San Juan, and Lopez Island. This makes the San Juan Islands a great spot for island-to-island golf. Overall, you’ll find dozens of golf courses in the Seattle area, ranging from a 705-yard, 9-hole, par 27 course to a 7,093-yard, 18-hole, par 72 course.

There are nearly 20 public golf courses to choose from in the Tacoma area, with several located in Tacoma itself. There are also three public courses in Auburn, two in Spanaway, and one each in DuPont, Ft. Lewis, Puyallup, Sumner, Union and Gig Harbor. This makes Washington a great place for golfers from Seattle and Tacoma.

Washington’s Suncadia Rope Rider in Cle Elum stretches 7,271 yards. This is the fourth city with a course longer than 7,000 yards in central Washington, making it a great place for long-distance players.

There are five public courses in east Washington that are 7,000 yards or longer in length. They are located in Kennewick, Moses Lake, Pullman, Richland and Walla Walla. Kennewick Canyon Lakes Golf Course and WSU Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman are among the top rated golf courses in the state.

Oregon golfers play everywhere

The Oregon Coast is home to many golf courses where you can see deer, moose, waterfowl and other wildlife. The natural terrain of this area offers plenty of water hazards, hills, sand dunes and forests to keep you busy. Here a golfer can ride against brisk winds, play within 100 meters of the Pacific Ocean and choose from courses designed by world-class golfing legends.

One of Oregon’s greatest golf destinations is Portland due to the sheer number of public golf courses located just 30 minutes’ drive from downtown. This includes three locations with multiple courses.

Even the serious golfer will love Central Oregon. There are more than a dozen 18-hole public golf courses between Black Butte and Sunriver. Black Butte Ranch has two courses that are over 7000 yards long and at Crooked River Ranch the course runs over a 300 foot deep gorge.

Eagle Crest Resort in Redmond offers three 18-hole golf courses and there are more courses in town. There are four 18-hole courses in Bend and the Sunriver Resort has two other public courses. Resort accommodations are also plentiful.

Eastern Oregon has public courses in eleven cities. You will find 18 holes in Baker City, Milton-Freewater, Pendleton and Umatilla.

There are many great golf courses in Oregon and Washington. Almost 350 courses are open to the public in these two states. They charge as little as $10 per game up to more than $200. Many have special times when it is cheaper to play. Taking advantage of twilight, early bird, senior, junior, and military discounts is one way to lower green fees; Some courses even let you play for 1/3 the normal price.
