The importance of the client consultation process must be made clear in all massage home study courses that you evaluate. When working as a holistic therapist, it is very important to have a client interview prior to any treatment.
If this is their first visit, you need to do a client consultation with them. A customer consultation helps you determine why the customer came to you. It helps you evaluate any health issues they may have, be they emotional or physical. This will help you formulate a treatment plan to relieve the client’s symptoms.
The customer advisory information should include:
- Personal data
- medical history
- contraindications
- lifestyle of customers
- treatment protocol
When conducting a client consultation, we look for contraindications to the treatment. Contraindications are health issues that the client may have, which means you should exercise caution or possibly avoid working on an area of the body. In more extreme cases, you may need to avoid treatment altogether.
It is important to inform the customer about this, e.g. “I’m just going to go through a consultation form with you. The reason we ask these questions is to determine if it is safe to proceed, to determine if it is safe to proceed with treatment. We are looking for health conditions which means we may need to change treatment or get permission from a doctor before proceeding. Any information you give me is private and confidential and will only be used to determine if it is safe is to continue treatment. “

Make sure both you and the client sign the consultation form to indicate that it is a truthful statement about the client’s health.
If the customer is a regular customer, ask them to review the completed consultation form and notify you of any changes. Once you have determined it is safe to proceed with the treatment, bring the client to the treatment area and perform the treatment. After treatment, you should assess the treatment, note any observations you made during treatment, and provide post-care counseling to the client.
When you evaluate the treatment:
- Ask the client if they liked the treatment, if not why not.
- Ask them what they liked best and take notes. They can change up their next treatment and do more of what they liked best.
- Was there anything you didn’t like, if so, can you change the next treatment and skip what you didn’t like?
- Was the pressure okay, in turn, does this allow you to customize your next treatment to your client’s needs?
- Write your response on the follow-up form, along with any problem areas you found while performing the treatment. It is important to write down this information as this is your record of treatment and you can use this information in the unlikely event that a claim is made against you. Just be prepared.
Client consultations are a very important part of being a professional holistic therapist. They protect both the customer and you. You will ensure that you do not provide any treatment to a client that could adversely affect their well-being and in the unlikely event that a client makes an insurance claim against you, this shows that you have taken all steps required of you , and it shows the health information that the client gave you and based on this information you decided to proceed with the treatment.
