SUNY Cobleskill Equine Studies Programs

SUNY (State University of New York) Cobleskill is located in Cobleskill, New York. The college is a four public college enrolling approximately 2,500 students and is located approximately 40 minutes southwest of Albany. The college offers several equine studies programs and currently has approximately 75 students pursuing an equine-related degree. Students can earn either an associate’s or a bachelor’s degree in a very intimate setting at the Equestrian Center. The associate’s and bachelor’s degrees prepare students for a range of different careers, including:

The Equestrian Center has many wonderful features that will enhance student learning. The center has new state-of-the-art stables, a riding arena, several outdoor arenas and miles of pastures and trails. The facility also offers many services such as training, breeding, tuition, clinics, camps and the center allows students to gain hands-on experience of running a large equine business and facility.

Once a student has completed their bachelor’s degree, they will be prepared to pursue further study in areas such as equine behavior, nutrition, physiology, veterinary science or pedagogy. If a student decides against a graduate degree, the bachelor’s and associate’s degrees prepare the student for immediate success in any equine-related field.

The College offers a Bachelor of Technology in Animal Science Equine Advice Track and aims to provide students with the opportunity to develop advanced skills in equine science, competition and business management. This program provides the student with an opportunity to expand on and build on previous background experience and increase the knowledge and skills needed to perform effectively in a variety of equine-related areas. Some of the courses included in this program are:

The “Bachelor of Technology in Agricultural Business with and Equine Business Management Advice Track” course focuses on all business aspects of equine management. This is a broad program that offers flexibility so that each student can design their own unique educational experience and still receive the knowledge they need to ensure they can achieve their long-term career goals. Some of the courses included in this degree are:

agricultural economics

operational assessment

environmental issues in agriculture

Students not pursuing a bachelor’s degree may choose to pursue one of the associate’s degrees the college offers. The Associate in Applied Science in Equine Studies provides students with an opportunity to learn about equine health, equine behavior, training, breeding, nutrition and feed management. There are additional courses for students to choose from including dressage and show jumping, tackling, reining, driving, eventing and conventional and therapeutic riding instructor courses.

Students pursuing an associate’s degree are strongly encouraged to select a specific area of ​​study from one of the four areas the college offers. Students may specialize in horse farm management, performance horse training, therapeutic riding and thoroughbred management.
