How Parents Can Organize the Day During Remote Learning at Home

As we are in the middle of a pandemic, parents need to take more responsibility to ensure their children receive a quality education. Many schools will operate a distance learning program to some degree, but for such a program to be successful, parents must organize their homes in a way that is conducive to learning by ensuring the home environment provides everything their children need.

Parents should understand that their children need every educational advantage during these trying times, and that home organization is vital to educational success when participating in distance learning. This process starts with creating a special place in the house for children to do their schoolwork, study, read, research, etc. Most parents set up a workspace in their child’s bedroom, but another room in the house is more conducive to distance learning than that room can be used. The area should have a desk and chair similar to a school workspace to make the child feel comfortable. The workplace should include, as required:

  1. Books (bookcase), magazines and newspapers

  2. Pencils, pens, paper and school supplies

  3. Computer, printer and internet connection

  4. information about the school

  5. globe

If parents want to do more in the room, they can view report cards, awards, report cards, and completed schoolwork with good grades. Parents can also put up positive posters on the walls to motivate them. Posting words and math problems can help make the area more like a real classroom. The idea is to make this a positive educational environment as children will be spending much of their day – and possibly evenings – in this space.

Once the space is complete, parents may want to consider the distance learning schedule. Most schools that run a distance learning program will create a schedule, likely from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 a.m. The curriculum is set and the school teacher takes care of the actual teaching. Schools need parental support to ensure the success of distance learning, especially with younger children who may find it difficult to stay focused. Therefore, parents will spend their time monitoring their kids to make sure they are on target. They also need to make sure they have the right technology and everything works. Parents should also make sure that their children eat breakfast, lunch and possibly a snack. Parents should schedule some form of physical activity for their children during the day as well. As you can see, parents have full-time jobs.

Some children will find it difficult to get used to the distance learning format; In this case, the parents will need to speak to the school for support. Parents may also want to plan some additional educational activities after the distance learning day is over to keep kids on track and not falling behind. Additional reading and writing activities are a good start. One way to encourage children to read is to place reading materials in every room in the house. Children who see reading material around the house are influenced by what is important to their parents. This is a great seed to plant that will grow over time.

Parents need to stick to routines so kids know what’s expected of them each day. Children still need time to do their homework, eat, do chores, and engage in fun activities with family. Parents may also want to engage the children in other activities to keep them from becoming bored or depressed. A few special projects parents can consider are:

  1. Learn to cook a special dish. 6. Write letters to relatives

  2. Learn to shop for groceries. 7. Take an online computer course

  3. Learn about financial education 8. Learn about the Bible

  4. Learn how to play the stock market 9. Learn how to play an instrument

  5. Learn how to play chess. 10. Learn a new sport/game

The key is for parents to create an environment at home that encourages creativity so children can learn, play and grow. That’s why it’s so important to make Children’s Day child-friendly.

The development of educationally successful children is one of the most important tasks of parents, but they should also consider that children need time to play and to be children.
