The Church of Scientology and Dyslexia

John Travolta, Tom Cruise and other Hollywood stars have credited the Church of Scientology with correcting their dyslexic reading problems. How did the church do that? I am not a member of the Church of Scientology and have never been. I have read excerpts from the L. Ron Hubbard books and other Church of Scientology courses, but that does not make me an authority in the Church. In today’s society, the Church of Scientology seems frowned upon by most theologians and academics. So why do Cruise, Travolta, and others cling to the Church’s successes in dyslexia and its “cures”? The Church of Scientology is very secretive, but future writers must delve into what, when, where and how this was achieved not only with the Hollywood stars but with other church members as well. About 10 years ago I did some digging and discovered the following:

It wasn’t a spiritual transformation that took place within Cruise, Travolta and others. They simply completed an intense academic study program called the Super Literacy Course. In my opinion, this 3D program/multi-sensory course was the pioneer in correcting reading and writing disabilities. Of course, many academics and experts on learning disabilities would disagree with me.

The Super Literacy Course was the first dyslexic program to focus on and correct the symptoms of dyslexia. If the reader hesitated, inserted a word, omitted a word, substituted a word, or skipped a line while reading aloud, he or she should focus on the specific word that was causing the confusion and unwanted stimuli and learn three fundamental aspects of that Word: what it looks like, how it sounds and what it means. The primary 3-D medium that the Super Literacy Course used to resolve unwanted confusion was clay for sculpture. So there is nothing mystical about curing dyslexia. It was a simple and basic educational course used to address symptoms of dyslexia associated with words and symbols in the English language.

The Super Literacy Course has undergone several updates and changes over the past two decades. What is available today is a watered down version of that course. Rather than go after the Church of Scientology and try to track down the original version of this course, I would recommend that you pursue a 3-D program that makes mastering abstract words and symbols a top priority. This is the key to eliminating over 90% of the dyslexia symptoms associated with dyslexia or 3-D learning problems.
