Starting a Prestigious Career in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering

Our world, and even more so our country of India, is full of engineers and doctors of all kinds. And in such a scenario, an aviation course like the aircraft maintenance course could be an exciting option.

Aircraft maintenance technology certainly sounds like another branch of engineering, but fortunately it is not.

Now that we have an exciting and prestigious career option ahead of us, let’s see what exactly entails.

First, it’s pretty important to understand that an aircraft maintenance engineer is not an aircraft engineer. The latter is an engineering branch commonly referred to as aerospace engineering and is a 4-year degree. AME, on the other hand, is a 3-year course upon completion you will not receive a degree but a license.

An aircraft maintenance engineer assists in the maintenance, repair, remodeling, and servicing of aircraft at a technical level. A daily part of Ames’ job is conducting aircraft overhaul programs and assessing the condition of aircraft and their engines. Only a maintenance engineer can certify whether an aircraft is airworthy or not. An aircraft may not take off without the permission and certification of an AME.

Now let’s move on to the terms and conditions:

• Prerequisite for the entrance exam is a 10+2 in physics, chemistry and mathematics with at least 50% overall grade.

• A degree in any engineering discipline.

• A BSc degree with 10+2 in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

To start a career as an aircraft maintenance engineer, you must obtain an AME license which requires you to sit an exam certification run by the Aeronautical Society of India. However, to sort this out, you need to enroll in a DGCA-approved aircraft maintenance training institute, as only they can provide you with the necessary knowledge and expertise.

The AME exam consists of 2 parts, a written exam and an oral/practical exam.

The written exam consists of 4 papers. These are:

• rules and regulations

• General engineering and workshop practices

• General airframes, engines and systems

• Specific airframe/engine/system as desired by the candidate

In the oral and practical examination, candidates must demonstrate their skills and knowledge of aircraft maintenance. This test involves an industry expert and requires a minimum inventory percentage of 70%.
